Recession Dashboard Update—Lower Recession Risk

On the whole, the probability of an imminent recession has declined since our last update in April and now stands below 50%. Only two signals changed in this update, the most significant being the S&P 500, which improved from yellow to green.

Recession Dashboard Update—More Deterioration

The latest ISM Manufacturing numbers resulted in a downgrade to that factor from “green” to “yellow.” Unemployment claims is the lone component with a green light on the dashboard. Overall, the various measures we track suggest the risk of a “real” recession is high—better than 50%.

Currently, the dashboard shows 6 green, 3 yellow, and 2 red lights. The overall message is that, while there are areas of concern, a recession is unlikely to be imminent (within the next twelve months).

A Cross-Asset Dash For Cash

March’s mad dash for cash didn’t stop with rates/credit/FX markets. Among equities, there was also a strong preference for cash liquidity. The market rewarded companies that had strong cash positions and punished those without—which explains why traditionally defensive styles actually underperformed.
